A local school is turning 150 this weekend, inviting the community to come and celebrate its history.
Bundaberg Central State School was founded in 1875 and has played a defining role in shaping generations.
The event includes a self guided tour of the school grounds through QR codes, with each each stop revealing a story featuring historical highlights and student memories.
Principal Frank Nastasi says the celebrations would honour the school’s legacy and connection with those who had contributed to its story.
“Since 1875 our school has been the heart of Bundaberg, shaping generations one student at a time.
“Whether you’re a past student, proud parent or a community member, this is the day to rediscover and reconnect and reflect on how special Bundaberg Central State School really is.”
Mayor Helen Blackburn, who spent her primary school years at Bundaberg Central State School, says the event highlighted the school’s importance to the region.
“Reaching 150 years is an incredible achievement and a testament to the many teachers, students and families who have helped shape this school.
“It will be wonderful to see people come together to celebrate a place that has been central to our community for so long.”
Reflecting on the upcoming celebration, Mayor Blackburn has recalled her own experiences at the school.
“I was a student at Bundaberg Central State School from Grade 2 all the way to Grade 7.
“Some of my fondest memories were of the parade ground where, each morning, we would have to line up and sing ‘God Save the Queen’ while the flag was raised.
“It was a time when the teachers and principal told us what was happening for the day and if there was anything special that we needed to know like a Sports Day or anything like that.
“The whole school would parade and everyone would definitely have to be there and you’d have to try and make sure you had your shoes on.”
Bundaberg Central State School will celebrate 150 years on Saturday 2 November from 10 am to 2 pm.
