Good news for local boaties and anglers with Walkers Point Boat Ramp in Woodgate set for major upgrades.
It’s part of a $6 million investment in marine infrastructure across the Great Sandy Marine Park, aimed at improving safety, enhancing access for recreational boaters, and supporting the region’s tourism.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett says extensive planning work has been undertaken to ensure the Walkers Point boat ramp upgrade meets the needs of the Burrum River boating community.
“Labor had years to act and did nothing for our marine loving community – leaving regional Queenslanders with crumbling, unsafe facilities.
“Now, the Crisafulli Government is fixing that.
“Advanced modelling of waves and tides will ensure the design of the upgraded boat ramp works with the site’s unique conditions, with the new floating walkway, rockwall and turnaround area delivering a better, more reliable facility for local boaties and visitors.
“With the 10th Annual Woodgate Beach Fishing Classic in September set to attract anglers from across the state, this upgrade can’t some soon enough.
“This is a fantastic outcome for the region that reflects our commitment to supporting recreational boating and tourism – something Labor simply failed to prioritise.”
Design works for the project are starting immediately, with the project expected to be completed by mid-2026.
It will include a full rebuild of the existing two-lane ramp, installation of a new floating walkway on the upstream side and construction of a rock wall to provide protection and more sheltered conditions for launching and retrieving vessels.
Woodgate & District Residents Association President Pauline Greer says the community is looking forward to finally having the ramp rebuilt.
“This has been years in the making with community petitions and letters to the State Government but we have always valued Stephen’s support and advocacy on behalf of the Woodgate community.
“The proposed design should hopefully reduce many of the past dangers posed by the fast-moving tides and wind conditions that made launching and retrieving boats dangerous.
“I believe older residents will once again feel confident to return to the water.”
Hunter Contractors Pty Ltd have been appointed to deliver the design and construction of the Walkers Point boat ramp upgrade.
Construction will commence after the Easter school holiday period to ensure minimal disruptions and efficiency.
Boaties will be able to use the Woodgate Beach boat ramp as an alternative launching location while works are underway.
