Kidman backs women after Weinstein reports

Nicole Kidman has applauded women for speaking out against abuse and misuse of power in the wake of alleged decades of predatory sexual behaviour by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

The Australian actress however, who has a long history of working with Weinstein, did not name the disgraced mogul in her remarks.

Kidman's statement came as former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and a growing list of A-List actresses including Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lawrence and Angelina Jolie condemned Weinstein after New York Times and New Yorker investigations exposed the Oscar-winning mogul's alleged behaviour.

Kidman has previously collaborated with Weinstein, with some of her most successful films - including award nominated roles in Lion and Cold Mountain, and bomb Grace of Monaco - made with him.

"As I've stated before publicly, I support and applaud all women and these women who speak out against any abuse and misuse of power - be it domestic violence or sexual harassment in the workforce," Kidman, in a statement released to People magazine, said.

"We need to eradicate this behaviour."

Kidman has been a vocal crusader for women.

The Australian has spoken passionately about violence directed toward women and dedicated her recent Emmy win for Big Little Lies to domestic abuse survivors.

Paltrow told the New York Times when she was 22-years-old and at the beginning of her career Weinstein hired her for the Jane Austen adaptation Emma and summoned her to his suite at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel where he allegedly suggested they go into a bedroom for massages.

"I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified," Paltrow said.

Her then boyfriend Brad Pitt allegedly confronted Weinstein about the incident.

Jolie said Weinstein made unwanted advances in her hotel room during the release of the film Playing by Heart in the late 1990s.

"I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein," Clinton, who has benefitted from Weinstein's political fundraising, said in a statement.

Streep said Weinstein was respectful toward her and she did not know about the allegations of other women.

"The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed, and those whose good and worthy causes he supported," Streep said.

"The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes.

"One thing can be clarified.

"Not everybody knew.

"Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally."

The New Yorker report, which came after a 10 month investigation, alleged 13 women between the 1990s and 2015 were sexually harassed or assaulted by Weinstein.
