Turtle hatchlings in full swing at Mon Repos

Visitor numbers at Bundaberg's turtle centre might be down due to COVID restrictions but the hatchling numbers sure aren't.

Mon Repos Turtle Centre report the season is going quite well despite tours operating at just a third of their capacity.

Ranger in Charge Kathy Gatley says February is usually where we see a peak and "we're seeing lots of hatchlings emerging at night".

"With our restrictions we're getting 100 people a night to come and see our turtles," Ms Gatley says.

"In a usual season we can take 300 people a night, so the numbers are reduced this season."

But if you've missed out on a spot you're not alone, as Ms Gatley says tighter numbers has led to bookings being filled up until the end of March.

"People that can't get tickets at night are often coming during the day, as well as people that are just here and like to come out and see what the park has to offer during the day so it's a really nice way to get a glimpse into what the turtle season is all about."
