Bundaberg is in the running to host an upcoming NRL game at Salter Oval.
Canterbury Bulldogs have shortlisted the region as a potential destination for their Round 20 clash with the Gold Coast Titans.
Bundaberg Regional Council has been in negotiations with Tourism Queensland and the Bulldogs to find out how much it would cost to bring the game here.
Mayor Jack Dempsey says showcasing Bundaberg on TVs across the country is exactly what the region needs in its efforts to bounce back from the COVID-19 financial hit.
"We're very keen and very confident of securing this type of event for the Bundaberg region, but a real positive for the community is being able to showcase the region," Mr Dempsey says.
Salter Oval can hold around 8,000 people, but a pre-season game between the Cowboys and Broncos in 2016 saw more than 8,100 attend.
Mr Dempsey says the match, scheduled for August 1, is the only one left without a confirmed venue.
"Hopefully, we should get the word back early next week for this NRL fixture.
"It would certainly be [great] for the community to be able to have this fantastic event," he says.
