Bundaberg remembers Battle of Fromelles

Bundaberg’s World War one Solider Second Lieutenant James Bensen will be commemorated today at a ceremony marking the centenary anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles in France today.

Born in Bundaberg and killed at the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July, 1916, Second Lieutenant Benson fort in Australia’s bloodiest day in military history where there were over 5500 casualties in a single day.

150 Australian soldiers have been identified by the Australian Army’s Unrecovered War Casualties Fromelles project team, which is trying to identify 250 Australian and British World War One soldiers found in a mass grave discovered in 2009 at Pheasant Wood near Fromelles.

Second Lieutenant Benson was one of six Australian soldiers whose name will be unveiled on their grave at Fromelles in a ceremony as part of the 100 th anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles in France today.
