Labor expected to win Townsville

Queensland Labor looks set to retain the seat of Townsville, bringing them closer to majority government following the November 25 state election.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland is understood to be on the verge of declaring the seat for Labor incumbent Scott Stewart following a strong challenge from the Liberal National Party's Casie Scott.

Mr Stewart is understood to have held the seat by 214 votes after preference flows and postal votes put him back in front of Ms Scott, who took the lead in the early going and remained neck-and-neck for the majority of the count.

The win in Townsville means Labor can now claim to be on track to win 48 seats, a two-seat majority in the new 93-seat Queensland parliament.

The ECQ has so far officially declared 54 seats across the state, 31 for Labor, 22 for the LNP and 1 for Katter's Australia Party.

The LNP is on track to pick up 39 seats, with pressure now on leader Tim Nicholls to concede defeat.
