Wild winds and rain lash Tasmania

Wild rain and winds of more than 100km/h have lashed Tasmania, leaving thousands of homes without power and several without roofs.

The cold front, which also hit parts of Victoria, swept across the Apple Isle on Wednesday morning.

Gusts of more than 130km/h were recorded at Hobart's Mount Wellington.

The worst hit area was Invermay in Launceston, State Emergency Service assistant director of operations Leon Smith said.

He told AAP several homes had lost their roofs while the Tramshed Function Centre had also suffered damage.

The SES received more than 30 calls for help across the state.

Matt Bendall from Wychwood Garden and Nursery near Mole Creek described the conditions as cyclonic.

"One of our English Oaks just snapped clean in two, quite extraordinary. Intense, crazy winds and then just gone in a heartbeat," he told the ABC.

TasNetworks is hopeful power will be returned to the 11,000 still-disconnected homes by the end of Wednesday.

At the peak of the wild weather, more than 20,000 properties were off the grid.

Lightning strikes at Hobart Airport caused several flights to be delayed.
