A police pursuit has ended after a car crashed into a cemetery in NSW's Hunter region.
About 10.25pm on Saturday, police tried to stop a Toyota Corolla on the New England Highway in Rutherford after it was spotted with suspected stolen number plates.
A pursuit started after the car failed to stop, and travelled through Rutherford and Telarah.
The car lost control and crashed through a fence to a cemetery, and across the tops of several gravestones, which caused them significant damage.
The male driver fled the scene but was arrested a short time later after he was tracked down by the Dog Squad.
Inquiries showed the car had been stolen from Islington.
The 37-year-old was charged with seven offences, including police pursuit, driving while disqualified, driving a vehicle without consent of the owner, using a vehicle with unauthorised number plates, driving recklessly, and possessing a prohibited drug.
He has been refused bail and is due to appear at Maitland Local Court on Monday.
