Cop assaults sparks union call to WA govt

The assault of two police officers in regional Western Australia has sparked a union plea to the premier.

An off-duty officer was allegedly bashed on his way home from work overnight at Kununurra and needed hospital treatment for cuts and bruises.

A man and woman have been arrested over the attack.

In a separate incident at Kalgoorlie, an officer was kicked in the neck while loading a man into a police van.

"I am horrified by the level of violence directed to those who are simply doing their job to protect the community," WA Police Union president George Tilbury said on Saturday, claiming the dangers must be considered in connection with officers' pay and conditions.

"I encourage the premier to take a look at these recent assaults and ask whether he would be prepared to face this danger for an extra $1000 per year."
