Two Pinocchio movies are being made right now – a live action from Disney and a stop motion version from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro.
Netflix has just released the first teaser trailer for del Toro’s adaption and it looks positively magical!
We all know the tale of the wooden marionette who wants to live as a boy, but if you’re familiar with del Toro’s work, you’ll know to expect something a little different. As the trailer hints: “It’s a story you may think you know, but you don’t.”
del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.
It features an all-star cast including Gregory Mann as the voice of Pinocchio, Ewan McGregor as Cricket and David Bradley as Geppetto. Other cast includes Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton.
The film is set for release in selected theatres in November 2022 ahead of being available to stream on Netflix in December.
Disney’s version looks great too!
Disney’s version, directed by Robert Zemeckis, will be released in September on the streaming platform. It stars Tom Hanks stars as Geppetto, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket.
Obviously it will have a very different feel but with such a beloved tale, we think there’s plenty of room for both adaptations.
