A group of 24 patients from the Bundaberg region has helped medical researchers in a skin cancer study that found immunotherapy treatment after surgery and radiation therapy can stop the disease from returning.

It’s the first time a Phase III trial has been conducted in the city – and in the Wide Bay Burnett – and involved patients and staff from GenesisCare clinics.

Bundaberg radiation oncologist Dr Gerry Adams said they found more than 80 percent of those treated with immunotherapy were disease-free for two years.

“The results are potentially practice-changing and may lead to new treatment methods for patients with high-risk cutaneous squamous cell cancer,” Dr Adams said.

The full results of the study have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
