Applications for the Play On Sports Vouchers program are now open, aiming to help Bundaberg families with sports club costs.
The vouchers are worth $200 and are available for every child and young person in the state aged between 5 and 17, and are named on their parents’ Medicare card.
Special allocations will be set aside for children living with a disability and those residing in country Queensland.
Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett, says the scheme will encourage more children to be active.
“We want children of all abilities to have the opportunity to participate in the sports they love,” Mr Bennett said.
“Across our region, 18 organisations have registered, but there is still plenty of time for more local clubs to get involved.”
Traditional Shotokan Karate Federation Australia Bundaberg is one of those groups.
Alex Fedotow hopes the program will entice children to take up the martial art.
“Karate helps with physical and mental concentration, not just during training but also in the classroom,” Mr Fedotow said.
“Since it’s a sport that uses every muscle, it makes for a very healthy lifestyle.”
