Out of the Shadows walk to reduce stigma

September 8, 2023 6:30 am in by

Suicide is a difficult topic to talk about, and tragically, with over 3,000 Australians losing their lives to suicide every year, Lifeline says it is critical that we come together to help prevent it and support those affected.

The organisation wants to see a suicide free Australia by taking the stigma out of the shadows and into the light.

This World Suicide Prevention Day, Sunday, a sunrise walk will be taking place on the Bargara Foreshore to help bring suicide awareness Out of the Shadows.

Lifeline Bundaberg Local Service Manager Joanne Adrelius says the community event is a safe space for people to come together to reflect on those they may have lost and to support each other.

“This event unites people from different backgrounds and communities who have been impacted by the death of a loved one through suicide,” she says.

“When someone’s life ends due to suicide, it has a ripple effect across the local community that leave many in a lot of pain. Coming together to reflect and support one another is part of the healing process.”

Lifeline’s Out of the Shadows Walk gives people who have been touched by suicide a chance to remember their loved ones and walk with others, who like them, have been affected.

“But also, by coming out to support the event, the community can stand together, to show others that support is available and to encourage people to reach out for support,” she says.

“Together, we can create more awareness of suicide prevention and break down stigmas to prevent further deaths by suicide.

“We invite members of our community to come and join in the walk with us, so together we can increase our communities understanding and awareness.”

The walk will begin at 5am Sunday, September 10th near the Turtle Park.
