Attorney-General Deb Frecklington has rejected an application by Fox Coal for a proposed mine in the Bundaberg region.
She said after a full assessment, the application was not in the public interest.
The attorney-general raised numerous community concerns opposing the mine, including its effects on Bundaberg’s agricultural and tourism industries, as well as water resources, environmental values, and livability.
In her decision, the Attorney General also considered an evaluation report by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett has thanked the community for their input.
“Thank you to each and every person who took the time to speak up, write submissions, and raise your voices,” Mr Bennett said.
“This decision shows that when we stand together and speak up, we can help shape outcomes that put people, land, and the public interest first.”
While the Member for Bundaberg, Tom Smith, said on social media that the decision is a community-fought win.
